This story contains spoilers for the ending of Transformers Prime: Beast Hunters: Predacons Rising and shippy undertones.

Love is a matter of give and take.

Most seem to think love is all give. You give to me, I give to you. They fail to see the taking, even as they take. They tell themselves they still give. They ignore the burden of their faith.

I never realized what I gave. I knew what I leveraged, but I never saw what I gave for free.

And giving from a not inexhaustible well, expecting nothing, gaining nothing… it’s addictive, the withdrawal sweeter than my former vice. Now I understand why you did it so much... Why now you do nothing else.

I sit in the ruins of Iacon, sunlight shining on twisted metal. None will rebuild here. They speak of ghosts, like humans do. Ghosts are dead. One cannot be haunted by that which still lives.

As I wonder where you worked, where you played, where you laughed… I hear another cry.

I find him easily. He weeps openly like the humans, thinking himself alone. He even smells like them, sweat and tears without blood. Vulnerable. A vorn ago I would have slain him.

“Why do you weep? Is this not what you wanted?”

He looks up at me, cool optics shocked, hunching in shame like a human laid bare. He stands exposed. I suppose he knows now that he need not fear me.

“What are you doing here?”

I sit on a fallen beam next to him. “Once I envied what they had here. I wanted to take it for myself.”

“I said ‘What are you doing here?’” he grumbles, the fire creeping back into his voice. “Present tense.”

I smile. “Why ask when you know the answer?”

“I’m trying to think of what to tell them back on Earth.” he confesses.

“Consider the truth.”

“That’s rich from a Decepticon.” He sits with me. Once we would have been too close. “I don’t know what the truth is.”

“You know enough.”

He looks heavenward, leaning back. Part of me is astonished at his openness, surprised he shares with me. More of me is astonished we had ever fought at all.

“They’re going to want to know everything. And I’m not sure myself. Sometimes… sometimes at night…”

I know where this path leads.

He shakes his head. “It’s madness. Sensor glitching, I’m sure.”

“If you were sure, you would tell your friends.”

“Do you ever hear his voice?” He looks into my optics, desperate. His face reminds me of his child companion’s. “At night, when it’s quiet… or, do you see him?”

I nod. “Not often… but when I do, he smiles.”

That seems to satisfy him. He looks away, sinking in relief.

I know that you are there; I need not see you. I feel you in everyone I pass. I see your smile on their faces.

Your friend needs me to be haunted, so haunted I am. You have given everything you are; now I give him what you cannot. Let him take it.

This is probably the fastest 4F I've ever done. I happened to have just watched Transformers Prime: Beast Hunters: Predacons Rising right when the announcement was posted, and when I saw the prompt, "Ghost Stories," this kind of came together out of nowhere. I composed right on the spot. The grammar's a little strange for me, but I intended this as prose poetry, which is why I say the grammar isn't wrong. I wanted to capture some of that poetic sensibility I've long admired in the various Megatrons' and Galvatrons' voices. And I'm pretty happy with it. My dear brother was happy with it, and he doens't watch the cartoons. And I edited it three or four times, so yeah.

Is it in character? I don't know. I thought the ending was out of character myself, but it's canon, so I ran with it. The final truce between Optimus and Megatron (or, more probably Galvatron now) moved me... but what struck me more was Ratchet's comment about the life he cares for the most. That's where this story came from. When I was reading it out loud in my final check, I found my voice going to different places, different pitches, in the dialog. I think this is as in-character and consistent as an attempt to follow up the main branch of the Aligned continuity can get.

So yeah. Enjoy some slash fic. And enjoy the title.

I have to admit, I waited to read this until I'd actually watched Predacons Rising (avoiding spoilers and all). I liked this. It adds more warm fuzzies to the conclusion, and also adds a sense of closure. It's not hard to figure out who they're referring to. Ratchet was very true to form and believable.

It's hard to judge any OOCness with Megatron, because we only saw about, what, not even a minute of his new philosophy and beliefs. Based off that (very) limited sample, I'd say this isn't outside the realm of possibility. If Predacons Rising had ended differently, then there might be an OOC argument. I think it's fine though, given our lack of source material to draw from.

I giggled a bit when I realized you chose this for the "Ghost Stories" 4F. After watching Predacons Rising, I (finally) decided what to write my 4F on: Predacons Rising! =P It'll be fun to write a 4F on the same source material and theme as you. :) My idea is completely different, though, and concerns what I consider a loose end.
