My entry for the Topsy Turvy Fanfiction Contest:

Topsy Turvy Fanfic Contest

Once a year we throw a party here in town
Once a year we turn all Paris upside down
Ev'ry man's a king and ev'ry king's a clown
Once again it's Topsy Turvy Day
It's the day the devil in us gets released
It's the day we mock the prig and shock the priest
Ev'rything is topsy turvy at the Feast of Fools!

Why am I quoting Disney's Hunchback of Notre Dame song lyrics? Perhaps because it's one of my favorite animated movies? Is it because it's April Fool's Day? Or maybe it's related to the contest I promised in the title?
Yes to all three! Boogie!
To celebrate April Fool's Day, I invite you to write a short "topsy turvy" fan fiction! A topsy turvy story (at least for the purposes for this contest) has everyone in opposite roles than normal. Bad guys are good guys and visa versa. You

The contest requires writers to write all characters as contrary to their essential nature. This is difficult, choosing an obscure fandom like RB; most of the judges are unlikely to know the original natures of characters in the story. I realized sometime Tuesday that I was going to end up writing a Shattered Glass-style story where Morocco was the protagonist. I did not think I was going to end up with what I have.

What I ended up writing was single marathon draft whose ending shocked even me, and I had a hard time looking at it the night I wrote it. I made up for it by long editing sessions Thursday and today. As a matter of fact, I've spent the whole afternoon on it, and sunk more time into it than I normally would spend on my weekly 4F.

Despite completely flipping the cast and writing a very dark piece in tone, I think I've kept alive some of the themes in Resce Bots, and the essential optimism-in-a-pessimsitic-world ideology of the show.

Note that while explicit "mirror universe" characters are forbidden, the Resce Bots cast has never been shown in Shattered Glass form in any official capacity that I know of. I did no research on Shattered glass for this project. I wrote as if Shattered Glass weren't a thing.

Final word count: 955.

Cheat sheet for those unfamiliar with Rescue Bots:

Dr. Thaddeus Morocco is a ruthless, selfish, greedy, and incredibly bold mad scientist who has been alive for over a century thanks to technology. Thad Morocco is a somewhat cowardly, but sefless and noble artist who has devoted his artificially-extended life to protecting his hometown from evil. The only things they share in common are their backstory as being quasi-immortal via technology (stolen tech even in canon, if memory serves) and their voices. Think Tim Curry.

Dani Burns is a spunky but lazy helicopter pilot in the Burns Family of Heroes, very much the middle of the family in terms of intelligence. Danielle Burns is obedient and driven to please her evil family. How do you pick the opposite of average anyway?

Cody Burns is the socially, morally, and intellectually brilliant youngest child of the Burns family. Therefore, Kody Burns would be dimwitted and annoying, not to mention evil.

Kade Burns is the least clever of the Burnses, self-centered but heroic, rude but well-meaning. Cade wold therefore be the clan mastermind, hiding his true inner ruthlessness under a veneer of gentle politeness. Nonetheless, I tried to preserve the lack of sophistication in his voice, as per my choice to keep Morocco's voice recognizable. Kade is voiced by Jason Marsden in the show.

Other characters who are mentioned but do not appear include:
  • Burns family patriarch Charles, who would become a corrupt cop
  • Benevolent but spacey mad scientist Doc Greene, who wold become a greedy and competant scientific magnate
  • Tech-savvy, self-centered thieves Evan and Myles, who would become heroic Robin Hoods of Griffin Rock
  • Evil Tech magnate Madeline Pynch becomes a benevolent character with military ties, and her bratty daughter Priscilla becomes nice and responsible
  • Evil paramilitary experimenters MECH become a morally responsible ally to the noble Decepticon freedom fighters
  • The Rescue Bots become "soldier rejects" from the evil Autobots
  • Chase, the polite police car, becomes a rude cop.

Neat and extremely creepy idea! For a kids show, I get the impression that the writing for the villains can creep people out to no end if you've emulated that! Kind of a sad ending, though, do you have another plan in mind for Evan and Myles?
